Doing things that make me happy

For ages I have been promising myself to get back into a blogging routine, as I have been very neglectful lately. No promises about being less sporadic, but I will try, because blogging makes me happy.

I had a holiday in Western Australia last month. It was wonderful, and I have come back energised, ready to keep crossing things off my To Do List.

The big one is to get the outside of the house painted.

However, like all renovation/maintenance jobs there were things that needed to be done before the painting could happen.

I wanted to change my gas appliances ~ cooking, heating, hot water ~ over to electricity and there was no point in attaching air conditioners and hot water systems to freshly painted weatherboards. I found a company that was able to organise everything. The tradies all came in on one day and changed all the appliances ~ and cleaned up after themselves! It was a great service.

Then I needed to get rubbish removed. Some of it was cluttering up the side of the house. Much of it was a pile of metal down the back of the garden that Terry has carefully collected over the years. “This will come in handy one day,” he would say, adding another piece of stainless steel to the pile. There are some things of Terry’s I haven’t been able to part with, but not the pile of metal down the back. It’s gone and I feel so much lighter!

Now the house can be painted, and my next dilemma is deciding colours. That’s good dilemma!

There are still more things on the To Do List, but I am proud of myself for chipping away at it.

Then there are the things that aren’t on the List but all of a sudden I am ready to add it to the List and cross it off in one swoop. Like the blind in the lounge room.

It’s a cheap bamboo one that we put up quite a few years ago. It worked okay for a little while, until, as it was cheap, the cord frayed and it wouldn’t go up nor down. It also stuck on an angle.

And that’s the way it stayed while life swept us along. Once I tried to take it down, but the ladder wasn’t long enough to reach and the blind seemed to be very securely attached at the top.

The inspiration came in the shower, as all good ideas do. “Why don’t I cut it?” So I did!

The outlook isn’t good, as you can see from the photo. The fence, and then the neighbour’s house. Another dose of inspiration was to sew shapes to hang from the blind. I cut the shapes from old watercolour papers, from a time when I was playing with colour charts. (Like Terry and his metal, I knew they would come in handy some time!)

It’s probably a temporary fix (which may well end up as a permanent one!) and it makes me happy. And that’s where I am at at the moment….doing things that make me happy…..as well as crossing things off my List.

Welcome back Anne! It is good to know you are OK and hear that you are turning ‘our house’ slowly but surely into ‘my house’ and well done for finding a firm which could do all the work in one go. Choosing paint colours is definitely a happy job – in my case one I can prolong for ages because it is such fun! I love the solution to the wonky blind. This week I took all the old books I finally acknowledged I would never read again to the charity shops, a job which took for too long because Covid lockdowns got in the way and then the books were in the loft so out of mind. When a friend helped me take a huge load of his Theology books to a second hand dealer’s warehouse (no charity shop would take them) it was an amazing feeling of relief.

Thank you for that very warm Welcome Back! It is good to be here (and my best intentions are to keep coming back.)

Well done for getting those books out of the house. I really understand that feeling of relief and lightness. As for choosing colours, the front of my house has a number of paint swatches, and none are quite right. Having a start date for the painter will focus my mind!

I sometimes find that by the time I have done all the tester pot swatches I have viryually eliminated the original colour. Maybe patchwork is the way to go?!

I feel your renewed sense of energy – and it makes me smile. Thanks for that! As for intermittent blogging? I work on the premise of ‘start with now’…as you have done also. It will help you jump in and blog whenever it ‘makes you happy’ with ease.

Have you decided on your outside colour yet? It’s such a momentous decision, because it’s so long lasting… I dearly love to add things to a To Do list which I can almost immediately cross off. It makes me feel so spuriously virtuous, but at least they ARE getting done. One of these days, I shall tile the kitchen splashback. It’s only been 6 years… Imagine the Husband’s shock if he came home to find it done! Stay well and cheerful, my friend, it’s good to see you back in the blogosphere.

No, no colour decisions yet. However, I am becoming clearer on what I don’t want. I have to get my skates on, as the painting may start in November. Nothing like a deadline to focus the mind!
I also love that virtuous feeling of crossing something off the list, when it was never really on the list. ☺️ I will wait to hear about the tiled splash back!

Lovely to see your update and creativity. You have accomplished a lot already with more in progress. We changed from gas stove back to electricity and my niggling cough is much improved. I cannot imagine choosing house paint colours… such a commitment! Those cane blinds are very effective heat barriers while allowing lovely filtered light. I love your window treatment.

I have achieved a lot, and I must remember that. When the List is so long and varied it is easy to become overwhelmed and forget how much has been done…from fences to selling Mum’s house.

How are you finding your electric stove? In many ways I prefer the gas, but I am pleased that I have done a little something for the world. I hope your cough improves very soon.

It’s a big step choosing the colour for the outside of the house, as I will be looking at it for many years to come ~ as will everyone who walks by! I have checked the council, and there are no restrictions (or suggestions) for colours. I also want something that is not outlandish but interesting.

I think my next post will be about my trip to Western Australia and the carpets of wildflowers I saw. Fingers crossed!

Hey! Welcome back, even if it is only now and then. So glad that you’ve seized life once more. Btw do you have/are you going to get solar panels to cut the electricity costs? And that window does look so much better. The Offspring and I are trying to tick a few things off our to-do-list too. So far? We push/pulled the old washing machine up the drive to the nature strip for council pickup. Doesn’t sound like much but that’s over 30 metres with a gentle uphill slope. 😀

Let us know what colours you decide on. Cheers.

I am going to get solar panels, but not for a while. The guy who sorted out the appliances for me (company called Goodbye Gas, which I recommend for a great service) suggested I live with all electric for 6 months/a year to determine the size that I will need.

I am impressed with getting the washing machine up the hill. It feels wonderful when you do something that has been on the List for way too long. You, and the Offspring, Rock!

Ah, that sounds like a very sensible idea. We have solar panels but nowhere near enough. I wish someone had given me that advice way back when.
And yes, we were inordinately proud of ourselves. DIY has its pleasures. 😀

As the others have said, WELCOME BACK!!! We’ve missed you! Looks like you’ve been putting your innovation and creativity to work … good on you! I’ve been battling Covid for about 6 weeks, so I haven’t kept up with too many other blogs, as my energy levels are still quite low, but I’m on the mend and hope to be fully back in the saddle soon. Again, good to see you, my friend! Hugs

6 weeks with COVID ~ argh! It can hit so hard. It’s good to hear that you are on the mend, but remember to take it easy when you need to. As you know there are some nasty long term effects. So Hugs back to you too. 🤗
