My blogging has fallen away of late, so I never wrote the post wishing you all a happy Christmas, and thanking you for your likes and comments and friendship throughout the year. But you were in my thoughts and I almost wrote the post!
We had our family Christmas on Saturday, and then my Mum, the Fella and I went down to Somers on Christmas Eve and stayed for a few days.
Somers is a little holiday town on the Western Port Bay, looking out towards Phillip Island. There is no pub, no shop, no 24 hour store, no supermarket, only a cafe and the beach. And it is not a town on the way to anywhere else. The road goes in, curls around the edge of the coast for a little way and then heads out. Even the beaches are hidden down little sandy tracks. It’s the perfect place for peace and quiet.
Our Christmas was very quiet but still full of love and joy, and food, of course. I made an eggplant moussaka.
My sister and brother-in-law came down Christmas night and there was more love and joy and food. And walks along the beach ( I am not a swimmer!). One time I found this strange object……
……which is a shark’s egg, probably a Port Jackson shark egg. Read here to find out more.
And then my little great-nephew Archie, who is one, came down with his mum. He delighted us, and seemed to fill the house with his activity and energy. The six adults watched and marvelled at everything he did, finding it all endlessly fascinating.
I hope that your holiday time was as full of love and joy as mine was, and that you found time to laugh and enjoy the company of loved ones.
Now we head towards new year. New Year’s Eve has never been an important night for me. I can remember some shocking ‘celebrations’. This year I will be at home and probably only still be up at midnight because I am absorbed in my book! However, I will be thinking back over 2018, and pondering 2109, making some plans.
No matter how we celebrate the new year, I know all of us will be wishing for a calm year, one where the earth and all who live on her have a chance to heal and find our balance again. I love this quote from Howard Zinn:
“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic.
It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty,
but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives.
If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something.
If we remember those times and places — and there are so many —
where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way,
we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future.
The future is an infinite succession of presents,
and to live now as we think human beings should live,
in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.”
Howard Zinn
What more can we ask for than to choose hope?
What will give you hope in 2019?

What a lovely post, Anne! I’m lingering in bed this morning since I’ve had the flu, and it made me feel quite serene! We too like quiet holidays, our entertainment being fully provided by five grandchildren. ‘Quiet’ of course being a relative term, but we are so lucky they choose to spend this time with us.
I found the sharks egg most intriguing, for a minute I thought it was one of your eggplants gone wrong!
Have a lovely time and all my best wishes for a wonderful 2019.

“One of your eggplants gone wrong” made me smile! They certainly are unusual things.
How lovely to have five grandchildren. I am not surprised they want to spend time with you, as I am sure you make and create and have interesting adventures with them. Sorry about the flu, but I guess it is the flu time of the year in Greece. Creative, peaceful, wishes to you too.

Somers is delightful, and the residents have fought hard over the years to keep it that way. As for the meal, we wanted something that was a little bit special and this fitted the bill. ☺️

Same! I went for a walk around the garden this morning, and that super fine drizzle actually felt good on my skin. I assume my plants love it too. 🙂

It sounds like you had a lovely peaceful Christmas. I’m with you on New Year celebrations. It used to be my favourite night of the year to go out when I was a teenager and young adult – now it just reminds me how fast time goes 😱
Love the quote.

We had the full family time a couple of days before. That’s always great, and now we have four generations at these gatherings! So it is nice to have the quiet time on Christmas Day. I hope you had a lovely day with your Family, especially as there was the nail biting time of whether they would all make it back in time.

I love that first photo–it *almost* looks like snow! Your Christmas sounds just about perfect to me–ours was a little more hectic, a little less placid, but still very nice. Zinn’s words are very comforting right now–I will try to keep his perspective in mind as we head into what is sure to be a wild and crazy 2019! Happy New Year, Anne!

I just hope our 2019 is a little less wild and crazy than we expect it to be. I am glad you had a lovely Christmas. Spending time with those you love is the greatest gift, isn’t it? As for the photo, I thought it had a snowy look to it too.

Happy Christmas! My blogging has gone by the wayside too, it all gets a little hectic at times doesn’t it. It sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas with loved ones which is just perfect. All the best for 2019, although I will most likely be fast asleep by the time the new year comes on by!

Love, joy, food and hope. Kindness to others and oneself, plus enough peace & quiet to kindle peace-of-mind… about sums up my wish list, festive and otherwise. Our festive celebrations fall across a number of days, we find although it’s still tiring we cope better than trying to do everything with everyone in a single event. Impossible these days, I think.

What a beautiful quote at the end, Anne, and lots of lovely news as well. It’s fun spending time around little ones. I’m glad you had time with lots of family and friends.
I’m hopeful for this country now that so many women and minorities have been elected to high office. We’ve needed this change for awhile. We have a long way to go to right the wrongs of our current administration, but this gives me hope. New years always seem hopeful as well. xo
