For those of us who sell our creations, on Etsy or elsewhere, we know how exciting sales are. Dawn, who sells the most wonderful jewellery, is celebrating her 300th customer (!) with a giveaway. Isn’t that an amazing milestone? Admire her work, and maybe win one of her lovely pieces.
I can’t really believe this happened – I have had my 300th customer on Etsy. Not my 300th sale – 300 people from all over the globe – that I didn’t know – have chosen to pay me for something I made.
I hoped I’d be able to make some sales, and I hoped to cover the start up costs incurred with a new business, but I didn’t really expect it to happen, especially as I haven’t done any of the things that people said I should – craft fairs, paid adverts on social media, traditional advertising, loss leaders, sales, coupons and the like.
I want to thank all the people who have supported me so far, so I’m running a giveaway.
Here’s how it’s going to work.

Isn’t it a wonderful achievement?
Yes, that is me at the Esty site (now I am blushing!). I am going to move from Etsy to somewhere like Shopify, or maybe Bigcommerce. At the moment I am investigating the pros and cons of the different hosting sites. Have you ever thought about using these sites?

I’ve thought about Shopify and even signed up to sell in Amazon Marketplace but never went forward with it. I know Etsy has recently raised the cut they are taking from 3.5% to 5% and I wonder if people will find other platforms to sell.

Thank you Tierney, so very kind. 3000 is a long way to go – I’m looking for 500 next!! Here in the UK Etsy is still pretty much the most economical of the handmade platforms. It has the advantage (for me) of being super easy to manage – I can create draft listing templates, and simple shipping profiles (in fact it practically manages itself now, which means more time for me to create and allotment – huzzah!) which I’ve been unable to do in Folksy, so I’m quite happy with the commission increase, but it will be interesting to see what effect it has. Thanks again Anne for your re-blog – so VERY VERY kind of you. And now Tierney has pointed out your etsy link……. 🙂

Thanks for you thoughts on Etsy, Dawn. You are right about how easy it is to use, and you are obviously very successful on it. I am still gathering my thoughts on it all at the moment.

And hey, the reblog was easy ~ you do the hard part of creating all that beautiful jewellery.

The rise in fees is one of the factors making me rethink where I sell. Mainly though, I think it is time to move onto my own website. I know nothing about Amazon Marketplace. Why didn’t you go ahead with it?

Working in a health care job full time I have not been able to commit the time to make stuff for selling. Plus this would take away from my art journey at this time. I want to spend my precious crafting time on art for myself 🙂
