New Look Etsy ~ and discount offer

Etsy is getting a make over. If you have a shop there you will know this and have been to see what your shop will look like. If you, don’t then it is to be rolled out this week. More on the look in a little…..

To celebrate the new look, which I like, I am giving my wonderful blog readers an exclusive coupon code. Using the code will give you 10% off my drawings and paintings. It’s simple to use:

  1. Head over to my shop AnneLawsonArt and buy a painting. You can buy more than one, and only pay shipping on the first.
  2. When you go through the checkout you can add the coupon code APRIL16 for a 10% discount.
  3. Wait for the drawing to come your way.

As for the new look, it is designed to be more mobile friendly. My front page used to look like this (and it still does if you check it out today)

You navigate by scrolling, and information should be easier to find. I have been astounded by the hysteria generated by the changes. The common reaction seems to be “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”. Then sellers sometimes go on to say “That’s it! I’m leaving!”, which is, of course, their choice. However, just this week I read wise advice that said, “Never make a business decision based on fear.” Make the decision based on reality ~ dropping sales, decreased views, hard statistics.

Apparently overall sales and views have been dropping anyway, so it will be interesting to see the impact the new look has.

I like the clearer, more minimalist look. I have always found Etsy easy to use, and with one exception, I think this will continue. The exception is the ability to rearrange my shop. This is the way to move items around the pages of the shop. The old way wasn’t perfect as it involved a lot of clicking. However there are no pages in the new way and so is harder to navigate. But after time I am sure I will work it out. (But I do feel for those sellers who have hundreds of items in their shop to rearrange.)

Pragmatically, just like the changes to Instagram, these Etsy changes are happening. I have no control over that. I can only control what I do and how I do it.

Great timing – and very generous – thank you. Earlier this afternoon I was on your Etsy site looking for a partner for my lovely ink feather… the frame space I have is 5″ x 4″. I’ve sent you a question via Etsy re the size of a watercolour feather we like 🙂


I like the new cleaner look too. I think it’s a matter of comfort; people get used to things looking and performing a particular way. Then it changes, we grumble, and then get used to it. One thing WordPress has done to annoy me is withdraw my current theme for new blogs. I wanted to set up a second one for a particular project which looked and felt the same as Chiconia, but I can’t… Oh well, off to learn something new. Have you received an envelope from me yet?


Yep, in a few months everyone will be saying “What changes?” It was the knee jerk hysteria that astounded me — but we can’t all be calm and rational like me!!!
I am sorry that you can’t use your original theme. It’s pretty and one I considered when I was setting up my blog. WordPress must be updating their looks too. Enjoy the challenge of a different one!

I think your shop will look great no matter what, but the dumbing down of all interfaces to make them mobile friendly seems like a mistake to me. It’s like saying that with the advent of microwaves, stoves and ovens are now obsolete. I think they’d be better off optimising for each device type rather than going for a one-size-fits-all approach. -shrug-


I hadn’t considered this from the view of dumbing down, I will have to think about that. Etsy’s argument for the change is that a large volume of their traffic comes from mobile sources. They are a business and want to keep their business at the top. I don’t agree with all the changes they make. A little while ago they changed their definition of ‘handmade’, making the site enormous. Combine that with a difficult economic time and generally views and sales have been down. I guess they want to do what they can to boost them again.

Hmm…if handmade doesn’t quite mean handmade anymore then Etsy may have morphed itself out of its own niche market. Pity. Anyway, this whole market is in flux at the moment and most of the change is driven by technology. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s left when they all stop experimenting.


That’s certainly what many people are thinking about Etsy.
Yes, it is technology that is driving these changes. I guess many people are feeling anxious about all sorts of things, and making changes to something (like Etsy, like Instagram) that could affect their business and their income worry them to the point of hysteria. We have no control over the big changes and advances in technology, so can only control our reaction to them.
(Pretty profound for 8:23am and only one cup of tea!)
